OUR LATEST EXPEDITION - Another World’s First

Of the world’s ten tallest mountains, eight fall within the borders of Nepal. That includes Mount Everest, the tallest at 29,032 feet. On this exclusive expedition we venture deep into the high Sivalik foothills and Great Himalayas to see all eight of Nepal’s colossal summits. Never before has such a trip been possible. This is what we do best - the impossible.

You would think it would be easy to see the world’s biggest mountains, but the Himalayas are often elusive. Since many of them are set deep inside the range on the border with China, the most common way to see them is a multi-day approach on foot or to see them from the air.

In 2018 we set out to curate an all-new route that would allow us to do what no one else had done. To lay eyes on all eight of Nepal’s tallest mountains - in one expedition.

Our all-new Eight Summits Expedition is unlike anything offered in the Himalayas. Starting in the stunningly beautiful tea region of Illam in the far eastern corner of Nepal, the route scrapes the feet of the Himalayas and winds its way westward. Passing through lush river valleys and climbing to towering heights, the journey culminates in authentic explorations of the famous Mustang Valley. Once there we slip between Dhaulagiri, the 7th tallest mountain on earth, and Annapurna, the tenth tallest.

More than just a trip to see massive mountains, this is an exploration of Nepal’s amazing natural and cultural diversity. From the banana groves of the lowlands, to the Buddhist monasteries of the high Himalayas, this expedition offers something new and exceptional around every turn.

Live the ADVENTURE

EXPEDITION OVERVIEW

  • We will limit the size of this team to just eight riders. It's a number we have found offers the fluidity required to move freely in rugged areas.

  • Like many of our remote explorations, we will travel with our full support staff of seasoned pros. This will include three cooks, one mechanic, one expedition leader, road guide, camp porters and drivers.

  • There are very few hotels or restaurants where we will be traveling so riders will enjoy our legendary mobile basecamp. Our light and fast version still offers multi course meals, hot showers, and other surprising luxuries.

  • A true expedition of this type requires extensive planning and alignment of resources, all of which will fall within the trip fare. That includes; all accommodations within the trip dates, including the arrival day, meals, motorcycles, fuel, permits, and all of our extensive guide services. You won't reach for your wallet for two weeks.

After our team gathers in Kathmandu, a short 60 minute flight puts us in the far southeast corner of Nepal. Immediately on arrival we depart on our first 2-hour ride into the beautiful tea region of Illam. This verdant landscape, just one ridgeline over from Darjeeling, India, is a stunning example of Nepal’s extreme diversity. On the horizon the 3rd tallest mountain on earth, Kanchenjunga, is our first big peak of the trip.

For the next few days we journey westward on some of the most serpentine roads in Nepal. The rugged foothills eventually take us to a secret viewpoint where we will catch a rare glimpse of the world’s highest summit, Mount Everest. Early risers will get to see the morning sun on the world’s most famous mountain.

More travel westward puts us in a wildlife sanctuary near Kathmandu before pressing on to the resort town of Pokhara. Our final segment includes three days riding deep into the Himalayas through the legendary Mustang Valley. Here we slip between the 7th and 10th tallest mountains on earth. The final camp of the expedition is a fitting end as it’s set right against the icy flanks of Annapurna, one of the most beautiful of the eight major Himalayan summits.

A short 30 minute flight on the final day places us back in Kathmandu for more explorations of Nepal’s ancient capital city.

Itinerary at a glance

  • Welcome to Nepal, this is a day to see the sights and rest from long travels.

  • A sunrise flight to Bhadrapur puts us in the far eastern corner of Nepal. Our first 2 hour ride has us in beautiful tea fields by early afternoon.

  • Rough roads and rugged terrain carry us westward to our first views of Kanchenjunga and Makalu. Our camp is on the grounds of a Nepali Army base.

  • Few roads offer as many curves as this one as we rise and fall. Over hills, down to cross deep river valleys. Each mile offers unbeatable views.

  • We climb one of the best motorcycle roads in Nepal, one known to very few, to see Mount Everest from close range. This is a highlight of our time in the east.

  • After a chilly night up high we drop nearly 8,000 feet to camp on the beautiful Son Koshi river. It’s time to warm up before pushing to Kathmandu.

  • We’ll have to work together on this day to navigate the busy streets of Kathmandu as we pass through the city on route to our eco lodge high in the hill. A view of Manaslu at sunset ends the day.

  • Nepal’s newest and most important highway lets us quickly transition to Pokhara, Nepal’s “Adventure City.” A free night allows ample time for everyone to find their own afternoon adventures.

  • With surprising speed we find ourselves deep in the Himalayas by early afternoon. We scrape the very feet of Dhaulagiri, the 7th tallest mountain on earth.

  • With no need to hurry, we spend the entire day exploring tiny roads laced around two of the biggest mountains on earth. Our high point briefly takes us to over 13,000 feet.

  • We don’t want the journey to end too soon, so a short ride puts us in our favorite camp right on the shoulder of Annapurna, the 10th tallest mountain on earth.

  • It doesn’t take long to return to Pokhara. We arrive in time to relax, get a massage, take a warm shower, and rest from a long adventure.

  • A mid-morning flight to Kathmandu has us back at the Nomad Hotel by lunch. There will be ample time to see some of the city’s famous sites before the final day.

  • Since most international flights depart in the evening, most travelers will have additional time to see more of Kathmandu. This marks the end of a spectacular Himalayan journey.

I can understand why Far Xplorer is the only company able to access the remote places in Nepal. Their professionalism and connection to the people of Nepal is simply amazing. We didn’t see another western traveler for the entire two weeks during our trip.

Tea is an integral part of Nepal’s culture. The country’s famous tea growing region, set just a hilltop away from the Darjeeling, India, is the perfect place to begin our journey. Vibrant and pristine, it is one of the most striking corners of Nepal and so far removed from the tourist routes, only a small fraction of outside visitors ever get to see this gorgeous landscape.

The Mustang Valley is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The scale of the mountains is hard to comprehend. To say they are big almost seems silly. There isn’t a word to describe how huge they are. I can’t wait to go back in the fall of next year.
