The trip for seekers and explorers.

Lost World Amazonas

Peru is a land of unimaginable diversity. It’s a place where beaches give way to vast expanses of arid desert and ice capped Andean summits tumble into the lush jungles of the Amazon Basin. One area not as well known to the outside world is the enchanted land of northern cloud forests known as Amazonas. Many of the attractions in this region were only discovered in the last few decades including the world’s seventh tallest waterfall. Come with us in 2023 to explore the hidden secrets of this lost corner of Peru.

Nature - Culture - Comfort

Not every adventure has to be difficult or push your comfort zones. We crafted this trip to include the best accommodations with the most authentic Peruvian character. Each day we will explore the lush mountains around Chachapoyas to visit ancient ruins, charming communities, and fold in unique activities.

This is rugged country, so we will travel by private vehicle, but still have ample opportunity for short walks, and maybe even a horse ride.

Arrival City - Lima

The portal to all destinations in Peru, the capital city of Lima is vibrant, modern, and exciting. Our accommodations just a stone’s throw from the coast give us easy access to great attractions like the famous Larco Anthropological museum and the cathedral of Plaza de Armas and the city’s 500 year old square. We will also visit the hip and colorful Barranco district.

Food Tour - Lima

No visit to Lima is complete without a culinary deep dive into the iconic flavors of Peru. Considered one of the top five culinary destinations in the world, we will spend time sampling Lima’s famous ceviches, and dishes like Lomo Soltado while washing it down with the nation’s classic cocktail, the Pisco Sour. Food is a central part of Peruvian life and a major component on our first day in Lima.

Itinerary overview

  • Our first day in Lima includes a stay in the hip district of Barranco with visits to the Larco anthropological museum and some of the best restaurants in the city.

  • An early domestic flight puts us in Chachapoyas in northern Peru by early afternoon. A brief 20 minute drive delivers us to our first mountain lodge in the forest.

  • For the next four days we embark on short drives to access the areas pre-Incan ruins and archeological sites. Each night returning to our luxurious accommodations.

  • Another short flight gets us back to Lima in time for one last dinner, this time including gourmet foods from the Amazon.

  • Depending on the time of your flight, you might even have time to paraglide along the coast before heading home!

Gocta Falls

It’s hard to believe, but the 7th tallest waterfall in the world wasn’t discovered until 2002. Tucked into a deep valley it was only known to the local population. Still rarely visited it sits in a stunning portion of the cloud forest teaming with exotic birds, wild cats, and thousands of plant species. We will hike to the base of the falls, and they will play backdrop to our view for three nights as we base our travels out of the nearby lodge.

Sarcophagi of Carajia

Dating to the late 1400s, the curious burial sarcophagi of the Chachapoyan people remained a mystery long after their discovery in the 1800s. As anthropologists explore more of the area, more sarcophagi have been found with their whereabouts closely guarded. The Chachapoyan people lived at the time of the great Incan empire.

Options and Difficulty

This is an active adventure, but not one that requires a high level of fitness.

Included in the fare: All hotels, lodge stays, meals, and ground transfers. Museum visits, trekking guides, and all other expenses are covered with only alcohol and optional meals not provided.

Trek Overview

Few places offer such a varied and beautiful network of trails in such a dramatic region. Our lodge gives us immediate access to endless miles of mountain trails, all with unimaginable views.

  • The pinnacle trek of the week, the famous lake situated at 14,000 feet is said to contain every shade of blue in the spectrum. It’s a sight to behold and the journey to get there is spectacular.

  • Located right behind our lodge we climb to a lake under Huandoy Glacier. This is our first warm-up trek in the Andes.

  • After a short taxi shuttle to the beautiful shores of Llangonuko Lake, we trek 5 hours back to the lodge along a lush river crisscrossed with ancient Incan era bridges.

  • We wake up long before sunrise to make the drive to see the sun illuminate the Andes at this famous location. We climb to 15,000 feet for amazing views before descending on a pre-Columbian trail.

We’re very particular about our hotel and lodge partners. Our preferred lodge in Amazonas has a commanding view of Gocta Falls and provides easy access to the attractions nearby. Built only recently, it has the high standards and Peruvian charm we know our travelers will remember for years. And the views, they’re hard to imagine.

A good traveler knows when to follow the crowd and when to take the path less traveled. Our trips are crafted to deliver unique experiences far beyond popular tourist destinations. We venture farther afield keeping in mind our travelers want great accommodations, top-tier service, and itineraries that let adventure unfold organically. We strive to make every outing — better than bucket list.
